As Delaware slides into August, our appetite for fresh produce and easy meals expands. Enter restaurants and food festivals, which offer a place to eat and socialize.

Here’s the skinny on Delaware’s dining scene.

Once again, Amy Bish, aka “That Pie Girl,”  from Wilmington, has nabbed many ribbons at the Delaware State Fair.

Beefsteak tomatoes, burgers & blueberry pies

The Delaware State Fair continues through July 29, and while the fair boasts a heavy roster of entertainment, it also offers a lineup of culinary contests.

Small Wonder Big Bite Pam GeorgeOnce again, Amy Bish, aka “That Pie Girl,”  from Wilmington, has nabbed many ribbons.

The Wilmington resident won first place for her apple-brown sugar crumb (a repeat winner), Mexican street corn quiche and blueberry lattice pies.

Her peach-raspberry-pecan crumb took second place, and her Atlantic beach pie and baked 9-inch shell came in third.

The Friday “Pie Day” contest is at the end of the week.

Bish also got a second-place nod for her brownie, and other culinary competitions include cupcakes, peach recipes, ice cream and bar cookies.

There will also be contests at the Historic Lewes Farmers Market’s annual Tomato Festival on Aug. 5 at George H. P. Smith Park in Lewes.

Home gardeners can enter their largest homegrown tomatoes in the Biggest Tomato contest, and customers can also guess the number of tomatoes in a jar.

If you were planning on going to the Delaware Burger Battle on Aug. 26 but hadn’t bought your ticket, you’re out of luck. The event is sold out.

Nick’s Pizza offerings will include this sausage and gravy pizza.

Pizza for breakfast

Nick’s Pizza is opening a store on Newport Gap Pike in fall, but until then, owner Nick Vouras is popping up all over the place with pizza specials.

For instance, this Saturday, July 29, he’s selling breakfast pizzas at the family business, Kozy Korner in Wilmington.

Options include scrapple, egg and cheese or sausage and gravy. Order a day ahead at 302-547-0380 and pick up between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. You can also message him on Instagram.

Meghan Lee of Heirloom in Lewes takes her culinary team on periodic research-and-development trips.

On the road

Kudos to Meghan Lee of Heirloom in Lewes, who takes her culinary team on periodic research-and-development trips.

For instance, the kitchen crew traveled to Portland, Maine, where they hunted for the best lobster roll, sipped craft cocktails and ate raw oysters.

The staff listed their favorite spots, including Hot Suppa for all-day breakfast, Eventide Oyster Co. for brown butter lobster rolls and oysters, and Judy Gibson, their overall favorite for best Portland restaurant.

Surf Bagel will open its fourth location this fall.

Now Open

Pizzeria Maki has a second location to the north at 45 W. Baltimore Pike (Route 1) in Glen Mills. It’s not far from the intersection of routes 1 and 322.

The first store in Greenville raised eyebrows when it offered pizza and sushi in a takeout format. However, the Italian-Asian combo pairs two of the most popular to-go foods, so each family member gets their pick.

Since SoDel Concepts acquired Surf Bagel in 2021, the concept has been on the fast track. Along with the original Lewes and the Midway Shopping Center site, there are now locations in Milford and Long Neck.

If all the permits go as planned, the next opening will be in Fenwick Island.

Also in that area, Fat Vinny’s, a food trailer and mobile truck in Sussex County, just opened a new brick-and-mortar restaurant at 8015 Fenwick Shoals Boulevard in Selbyville.

Customers crave the Philly-style cheesesteaks, served on bread from Serpe’s & Sons in Elsmere.

On Saturday, Oct. 14, Milford’s bakeries, including Dolce, will host Milford’s Downtown Dessert Tour.

Sweet Surrender

Milford is becoming a sweet destination. The town on the Mispillion River is home to My Sister’s FaultFortunata’s BakeryRosita’s Bakery and Dolce Bakery & Coffee Shop.

On Saturday, Oct. 14, the bakeries will host Milford’s Downtown Dessert Tour. Pick up a flyer at any of the shops, make a purchase and collect a stamp. Once you have all four, drop off the flyer at one of the locations for a chance to win a prize.

Don’t worry about loading up on sugar. Fortunata’s specializes in authentic Italian breads and rolls, and My Sister’s Fault is known for empanadas and savory platters.

Of course, Dolce Bakery serves coffee.

Summer Sandwiches

Delaware has more than enough sub shops and cheesesteak spots, and Gaudiello’s in Trolley Square has both subs and steaks on the menu.

However, we recommend owner Eric Huntley’s thick sandwiches piled high on top-shelf bread.

The corned beef sandwich was so large you could easily enjoy it at four meals. If, that is, you can stand to part with it long enough to wrap it.

Ready for a dare? Huntley put The Dagwood on the menu for the fun factor. The 1½-pound sandwich has ham, roast beef, maple-pepper bacon, lettuce, tomatoes, red onion, pickles, mustard, mayonnaise and American cheese.

However, a surprising number of customers order and eat the whole thing.

High Five Gives Back

Restaurants are the source of significant community support, whether it’s a dine-and-donate event or a gift card for a silent auction.

Many hospitality groups have philanthropic arms. Buffalo Wild Wings’ fundraising program recently contributed $500 to the Greater Newark Boys & Girls Clubs.

Kayla Black, a club counselor, Amber Hickman, New Castle area coordinator and Stu Sherman, senior executive director of program development, were present to receive the check from Clark Anderson of High Five Hospitality, which owns the Delaware Buffalo Wild Wings franchise.
