Georgetown – Sussex Central head football coach John Wells will forever remember career win number 200. Not so much for the milestone, but for the dramatic fashion in how his team won.

“A pick six, a scoop and score, turnovers the first half surely didn’t look like we would win this game, but these guys stepped up in the second half and got it done,” Wells said.

Trailing 28-21 at halftime Sussex Central six touchdowns in the second half for a 54-34 win.

The Golden Knights led 14-7 early in the second quarter on touchdowns by Reif Steen and Andrew Long before Hodgson answered with three straight scores. The Silver Eagles Jace Hawkins scored on runs of  2 and 10 yards followed by a 42 yard interception return by Logan Peck. P.J. Henry returned the ensuing kickoff 68 yards as the Silver Eagles took a 28-21 lead into halftime.

Sussex Central came out of the intermission scoring the next four scores of the game with three of them by Henry.

Henry scored on runs of 60, 6 and 76 yards. Malik Bell added a 29 yard run for a touchdown.

Hawkins scored on a three yard run for Hodgson to close the game to 40-34 late in the fourth quarter, but Long’s 60 yard touchdown run and Bell’s 46 yarder put the game away for Sussex Central.

Sussex Central improves to 3-0 and will be idle this week before traveling to Smyrna on September 30 for their Class AAA District 2 opener. Hodgson falls to 1-2 and will host William Penn on Saturday.

“There have been a lot of players, a lot of coaches through the years that have contributed to the 200 wins. People like Dave Marvel and Derrick Layfield who have been with me for many years,” Wells said.

Wells also has over 400 wins as Sussex Central’s softball coach. He has won state championships in both sports.

“I have been very blessed,” Wells said.
