Top seeds advance in DIAA wrestling championships

The top seeds in both Division I and Division II tournaments advanced on Wednesday night.

Winners from Wednesday night will advance to the state semifinals to be held on Saturday at Smyrna High School.

 

Division I

 

Sussex Central 55 – Sussex Tech 14 – Sussex Central won the first eight weight classes to put the match away before Sussex Tech could win a bout. The Golden Knights recorded seven pins by Austen Decker (106), Drake Rogers (113), Evan Cordrey (132), Talan Savage (138), John Rovillard (144), Justin Craig (157) and Gabe Cannon (175).

Dustin Elliott (150) had a pin for Sussex Tech.

Sussex Central will meet Caesar Rodney on Saturday at 2:00 PM in the semifinals.

 

Caesar Rodney 33 – Wm. Penn 31 – The most dramatic match of the came down to the last period of the final match of the night where the Riders Walter Toomer (215) trailing 6-1 recorded a pin 4:30 to give Caesar Rodney the win.

Bonus points were the difference as each team won seven matches and each recorded three pins. Caesar Rodney got pins from Cole Moffett (120), Trevor Copes (132) and Toomer. Wm. Penn got pins from Tony Trotta (113), Jason Hughart (175) and Eli Juarquin-Torres (285).

Caesar Rodney will meet Sussex Central on Saturday at 2:00 PM in the semifinals.

 

Cape Henlopen 34 – Smyrna 27 – Cape Henlopen took four straight bouts in the middle of a back and forth match taking eight of the fourteen bouts.

Cape Henlopen got pins from Austin Guerrierri (106), Nick Walker (144) and Patrick Donahue (215). Smyrna got pins from Warren Coates (126), Brandon West (150) and Teagan Gratkowski.

Cape Henlopen will meet Salesianum on Saturday at 2:00 PM in the semifinals.

 

Salesianum 46 – Milford 30 – Defending state champion Salesianum used five pins and a forfeit to advance, winning nine of the first ten bouts on Wednesday night.

The Sals got pins from Mason Catania (106), Carter Davis (113), Dominic Lucian (120), Matthew Copeland (138) and Gardner Hall (157).

Milford got pins from Jami White (165), Brian Seward (175), Jordan Curry (190) and Greg Lockett (215).

Salesianum will meet Cape Henlopen on Saturday at 2:00 PM in the semifinals.

 

Division II

 

St. Mark’s 72 – A. I. DuPont 6 – St. Mark’s won all but one bout on Wednesday night winning twelve of those bouts with bonus points.

The Spartans got pins from Aiden Zellman (285), Aaron Menickella (126), Jack MacDonald (132), Chris Foster (138), Alec Baxley (144), Brayden Ranauto (157), Jacob Ebaugh (165), Vincent Hurst (175) and Hanna Finn (190). The Tigers Xavier Ramos recorded a pin at 120 pounds.

St. Mark’s will meet Laurel on Saturday at 4:00PM in the semifinals.

 

Laurel 45 – Caravel Academy 33 – Laurel outlasted Caravel in a back and forth battle that ended with a pair of forfeits split between the two teams.

Laurel got pins from Joseph Baynard (285), Kade Wooten (113), Macario Perez-Soriano (120), Connor Smith (132), Zeke O’Hara (144) and Stanley Pete (157).

Caravel got pins from Natalie Radecki (106), Julian Rexrode (126), Eddie Radecki (138) and Quincy Young (175).

Laurel will meet St. Mark’s on Saturday at 4:00 PM in the semifinals.

 

Lake Forest 59 – Tower Hill 18 – Lake Forest took the first eight bouts of the night to put the match out of reach before Tower Hill could get in the win column in the quarterfinal round of the DIAA Dual Meet State Championships.

Lake Forest used pins by Aaron Ratledge (113), Mason Ferrell (126), Ian Nance (144) and Nurrideen Ahmad-Statts (157).

Tower Hill got a pin from Keelan Duffy at 175 pounds.

Lake Forest will meet Delaware Military on Saturday at 4:00 PM in the semifinals.

 

Delaware Military Academy 58 – Red Lion Christian Academy 12 – Delaware Military took twelve of the fourteen bouts, eight with bonus points advancing the Seahawks to the final four on Saturday.

DMA got pins from Cyrus Hurley (113), Charles Perrin (150) and Malcolm Roy (157).

Tye Bellarin (120) and Xavier Moore (215) recorded pins for Red Lion.

Delaware Military will meet Lake Forest on Saturday at 4:00 PM in the Semifinals.
