New Castle County Public Safety Department Recruiting Event

New Castle County’s Public Safety Department will hold a celebration and recruiting event Saturday, Sept. 10 at the Christiana Mall.

The event will be held between Nordstrom and Cabela’s and will go on from 12 p.m. until 4 p.m.

“We’ll celebrate our public safety, including police, fire, 911 communications, paramedics and the Office of Emergency Management,” said Sgt. Tracy Duffy, public information officer with the New Castle County Police Department.

“We’ll be actively recruiting,” she said. “This will give attendees the opportunity to learn about all of the divisions that we have within the Department of Public Safety, and then also apply on the spot.”

The department hopes to recruit police officers, firefighters, paramedics, crossing guards, 911 operators and emergency management personnel.

Duffy said application numbers are low — a problem that could be compounded as more become eligible for retirement.

“We’re hoping that we get a number of attendees so that we can fill our next academy classes,” she said. “We need to backfill those positions so we’re eagerly looking for folks who are interested in public safety or becoming first responders.”

Prospective employees needn’t bring anything to the event except “positive attitudes, an open mind and some enthusiasm,” Duffy said.

The event is more than a job fair, though.

There will also be specialized unit demonstrations, including K-9s, drones and a virtual reality tent. The 911 communications team and paramedics will be on scene with some of the equipment they use in the course of their duties.
