While the Delaware State Hornets take on the Morgan State Bears Saturday, the Delaware Department of Education will be working to build its roster by recruiting future teachers.

Prospective educators will be able to meet with 17 districts and charter schools during the game, which begins at 2 p.m. at DSU’s Alumni Stadium in Dover.

“I am excited to see more nontraditional events like the recruitment event this Saturday,” said Kendall Massett, executive director of the Delaware Charter Schools Network.

For months, state education officials have worked to address Delaware’s teacher shortage.

In addition to recruitment events like Saturday’s, the state legislature has passed laws to try to foster a deeper educator pipeline.

This includes Grow-Your-Own teacher programs, where high school students serve as teacher’s aides during in high school with the hope they’ll eventually come back and teach in the district they attended.

The state also passed a law that established a teacher compensation committee to evaluate and make recommendations on Delaware’s teacher pay scale.

That law was in response, in part, to Maryland raising the base pay for teachers to $60,000 annually.

“We need to continue to be creative with our recruitment efforts so that we can reach those in our communities that we may not otherwise connect with,” Massett said.

Here’s a list of the schools that will have recruiters at the game:

  • Appoquinimink School District
  • Brandywine School District
