DIAA 2021 softball playoffs day two 1st round results

#1 Sussex Central 7 – #32 Milford 3Ā 

The top seeded Golden Knights took a 4-0 first inning lead on the way to a 7-3 win over Milford. Madge Layfield recorded 17 strikeouts while Kate Evick led the offense with 2 doubles and 4 hits. McKenna Boyle collected 2 hits and knocked in 2 runs and teammate Ayanna/Pinky Briddell added 2 more RBIā€™s for Sussex Central. The Bucs were led by Ashley Bullock with 2 hits and 2 RBIā€™s. Central will face #16 seed Padua on Saturday.

#16 Padua 13 – #17 Cape Henlopen 3 (6 innings)

Cape Henlopen raced out to a 3-0 lead after two innings but the Pandas out-scored the Vikings 13-0 the rest of the way to advance to the ā€œsweet 16ā€. Lauren Schurman allowed 4 hits and struck out 6 plus had 3 hits to help her cause. Sara Moore, Stassi Watson and Cate Shrader all collected 2 hits for Padua. Capeā€™s Marissa Frederick recorded 7 strikeouts while Taylor Husbands had 2 hits and 2 RBIā€™s. Padua will travel to Georgetown Saturday to face the Golden Knights.

#5 Smyrna 20 ā€“ #28 St. Elizabeth 0 (5 innings)

Payton Dixon and Carly Maxton combined for 13 strikeouts and ā€œno-hitā€ the Vikings. Dixon hit a home run and had 3 RBIā€™s. The Eagles banged out 17 hits with Hailey McCutchan getting 3, Sydney Eihinger and Makayla Brantley each had 2. Meghan Shirey scored 3 times and knocked in 2 more in the win. The Eagles will host Newark Charter Saturday.

#2 Delaware Military Academy 9 ā€“ #31 Polytech 0

Not only did Graceyn Frost pitch a perfect game but she struck out all 21 batters she faced in the game! Sara Ann Sobocinski went 2-for-3 at the plate with 4 RBIā€™s, Marisa Edevane hit a home run and brought 2 runners home, and Gabriella Campbell was 4/4 with 2 runs scored to lead the Seahawk attack. DMA will face Lake Forest Saturday at Midway.

#18 Lake Forest 5 – #15 Delmar 1

Lake Forest held a slim 2-1 lead after 5 innings but scored 3 times in the top of the 6th with the key hit provided by Addyson Stewart as she belted a 2-run homerun. Alexis Stahre & Karly Cain each had 2 hits while Payten Moore and Skylar Copio worked in the circle combining to limit the Wildcats to just 4 hits. Delmar was led by Ally Marly with 2 hits and a home run, while Emma Czwalina picked up 7 strikeouts ā€“ allowing just 3 earned runs. Lake advances to face the 2-seed DMA at Midway Saturday.

#3 Caravel 17 – #30 MOT Charter 0 (5 innings)Ā 

Jess Walter & Lauren Dickerson combined on a 2-hit shutout in the circle for the Buccaneers. Veronica Diomede led the offense with 4 hits and 4 runs, while Brooke Holdsworth added 3 hits and 5 RBIā€™s in the Bucs 19-hit effort. Allyson Lorenzoni and Daphney Sapp collected the two hits for the Mustangs. Caravel hosts #19 Seaford on Saturday.

#11 Middletown 8 – #22 Dover 1

Middletownā€™s Lydia Drake struck out 12 batters & allowed just 2 hits plus helped her cause with a 2/3 performance at the plate. Jax Hackett and Reese Founds each had 3 hits to pace the Cavaliers. Doverā€™s 2 hits were courtesy of Chelsea Johnson and Jamie Chandler. Middletown advances to a round-of-16 matchup with Sussex Tech in Georgetown on Saturday.

#6 Sussex Tech 10 – #27 Mt. Pleasant 4

The 6th seeded Sussex Tech Ravens led just 5-3 after 4 Ā½ innings but scored 5 times in the bottom of the 5th to secure the win. Kylie Kruger went the distance allowing 6 hits and striking out 7. Kruger, Megan Sterling and Victoria Lecates each hit safely twice (Lecates had 4 RBIā€™s). Mount Pleasant pitcher Teagan Bradley struck out 10 Ravens and she also belted a home run, while teammate Brianna Snover smacked 2 hits with 2 RBIā€™s. Sussex Tech will host Middletown Saturday.

#4 Laurel 7 – #29 Archmere 0Ā 

Kylee Hill pitched a 3-hit shutout with 7 strikeouts as Laurel held off a pesky Archmere team. The 29th seed trailed just 2-0 after 5 innings when The Lady ā€˜Dogs scored 5 times in the bottom of the 6th to get the 7-0 victory. Laurel actually threatened to open up a big lead in the 4th inning when Ashlyn Ullman hit a leadoff single and was followed by a single to center by Makenzie Whaley but Ullman was thrown out attempting to advance to third on the hit by the Auks centerfielder Ryan Vitola. The next batter (Hill) smacked a fly ball to deep right-center when Vitola made a great catch in full stride for the 2nd out. The final out of the inning was a fantastic catch at the backstop on a high foul ball snared by catcher Megan Disabella. The Lady Dogs also had some fine defensive plays especially by shortstop Carlie Venables who had 5 assists and turned a double play. Couri Smith had another good game at the plate going 2/4 with a run, an RBI and 3 stolen bases. Kaegan Brittingham had a big 2-run double in the 5-run 6th inning that helped put the game out of reach. Laurel will host St. Markā€™s on Saturday as the field of 16 is set.Ā
