The new Claymont Transportation Center is among 12 finalists in the 2024 America’s Transportation Awards contest, and local votes can push it into the People’s Choice title.
The center, which opened Dec. 4, 2003, offered Delaware commuters an upgraded option to ride the rails.
Named for former state senator Harris McDowell III, it has more than 800 parking spaces including 13 EV charging stations, two ADA-compliant high-level covered platforms with windscreens, benches and USB charging ports, bicycle racks and repair stations, real-time passenger information displays, and vending machines.
It was a major renovation for the old Claymont Train Station, built in 1980, with outdated facilities, a flood-prone tunnel and an inaccessible platform on a curved portion of track.
The center already has won the best Quality of Life/Community Development Award for the Northeast Association of State Transportation Officials region.
Now it is competing for the national Grand Prize and People’s Choice Award sponsored by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, AAA and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
Claymont votes
Judges will choose the Grand Prize, but voting is now open for the People’s Choice Award. It’s open through Oct. 29, but only one vote is allowed per 24 hours.
Online votes will be weighted to each state’s population, allowing for greater competition among states with larger and smaller populations.
The winners will be announced at the AASHTO Annual Meeting in Philadelphia Oct. 29-Nov. 1. Both winners will receive $10,000 each for a charity or transportation-related scholarship.
