The No. 1 ranked St Elizabeth’s Vikings are the number one seed in this year’s Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Associations (DIAA) boys basketball state championship. The brackets were revealed today as the committee met at the DIAA headquarters in Dover.

St Elizabeths suffered just one loss this season when the No. 5 so have a chance to meet again in the Semifinals, but both will have difficult matchups before they can meet again.

St Elizabeth has a potential matchup with last year’s Cinderella team the No. 8 seed William Penn Colonials. The Colonials were the runner up in the championship last season so they are a threat to any team they will face in this tournament. They have some returning starters from last season’s team and their leader, coach Gary Lumpkin is no stranger to state championships.

The Warriors have a potential match with last year’s state champion the Salesianum Sals. The Sals are the No. 4 seed in this season’s tournament even with a 12-8 record. They have played a tough schedule both in and out of state . A battle tested team with their core players from last year’s championship makes the Sals a threat to win it all again

On the other side of the bracket the No. 2 seed Dover Senators are the top seed with No. 3 Middletown. The two teams have not faced off this season, but both have been in the top 3 for weeks now. Both teams are very similar in play and size which could make for a very interesting semifinal matchup.

Seaford gets the No.7 seed and they will be heading back to the playoffs with an 18-2 record. They are a very different team then last year’s team who almost made the semifinals and made the semifinals the prior year.

A surprise team this year on the same side is the No. 6 Seed St Marks Spartans who missed the playoffs last season and now are a top 10 team. Since coach Lonnie Wrights took over St Mark’s basketball has had a fast resurgence back to a top team in the state.

Other teams to look out for on this side of the bracket are St Georges who has a team that can matchup with anyone and a coach that has also been to the semifinals and finals. Also keep an eye on No. 15 Lake Forest,  No. 14 MOT Charter and No. 11 Appoquinimink.

Tuesday is the start of the DIAA boys basketball state championship as the first round kicks off. Be sure to go out and check out some of the games since it will be the last game of the season for some teams. It should be a fun tournament this season with plenty of teams having a chance to walk away with a state championship.
