The Smyrna Eagles improved to 12-0 on Senior Day with a surprisingly easy 78-43 win against Caesar Rodney Saturday in boys’ basketball action.

The Riders entered the game with a 7-3 record and trailed just 13-10 early in the 2nd quarter following a Mason Williams 3-pointer.

That’s when Smyrna “turned up” the defense forcing several turnovers in a 23-1 run that blew the game open. The Eagles led 39-17 at halftime and outscored CR 39-26 the rest of the way.

Five Smyrna seniors were honored before the game as part of the “Senior-Day” festivities. They all contributed to the win.

Robert Wiley led the scoring with 16 points, “Moo” Salako added 14, Cole Matthews and junior Elisha Gregory chipped in with 10 points each, and fellow senior Aiden Sanchez scored 6.

Senior point guard Elijah Credle recorded several assists, including an alley-oop for a slam by Salako, and bounced a pass off the “glass” for another Salako flush! Both worthy of a highlight reel.

The Riders were led by Ryan Carey with 11 points, while leading scorer Brycen Williams was held to 8. He averages over 16 points per game. Caesar Rodney had a 2-game win streak snapped.

The Eagles can clinch the Henlopen-North title with a win Monday at home against Sussex Central. They finish the regular season Thursday at Dover.

The Senators must win games with Cape Henlopen and Polytech and hope the Eagles fall to Central to set up a possible title game on the 25th. Dover has a 9-2 record with losses to Smyrna & the Riders.
