Senate Dems pick up committee seats with larger majority

Leaders in the Delaware Senate have revealed the body’s committee assignments for the 152nd General Assembly which begins in January.

Senate President Pro Tempore-Elect Dave Sokola announced the assignments Monday.

“Legislative committees are an essential part of the legislative process where senators gather public input and determine which bills should move forward,” Sokola said in a news release. “The assignments I’m announcing today will give every member of our majority caucus the opportunity to lead while giving the minority caucus proportional representation.”

In a statement to Delaware LIVE News, Senate Minority Leader Brian Pettyjohn thanked Sokola for honoring the committee assignment requests of the Republican Caucus’s members.

“As a caucus, we are ready to thoughtfully take part in the committee process and propose legislation that will have positive impacts on the State of Delaware,” Pettyjohn said.

In addition to assigning members to committees, Sokola announced some minor restructuring that will take effect next session.

The previously distinct Transportation Committee has been merged into the new Environment, Energy & Transportation Committee, while the Banking, Business & Insurance Committee will expand its scope to include matters related to technology and the Housing Committee will expand its scope to include land use.

“These changes reflect how intertwined these issues are with one another,” Sokola said.

“As we continue to make record investments in our roads and bridges, we need to be ever mindful of how our transportation network impacts Delaware’s fragile ecosystems and open spaces. Likewise, technology is now a central component of any commercial operation and land use is inextricably linked with housing.”

Sokola said Senate committees were adjusted to reflect Democrats’ expanded supermajority.

Democrats now hold 15 seats in the Senate compared to Republicans’ six.

“Adding additional Senators to committees will give our members stronger voices in shaping the policies of our state,” he said. “These assignments put senators’ individual expertise and personal experiences to the highest and best use.”
