The No. 1 and No. 2 prospective teams all year will face off in this year’s DIAA Girls Basketball state championship Friday night at the Bob Carpenter center. Sanford holds the number 1 seed right now, but Ursuline held it for many weeks until the two teams faced off against one another. Sanford defeated Ursuline in their only matchup back on February 10th by a score of 59-51.

Ursuline played the early game last night as they faced off with the No. 11 seed Woodbridge Blue Raiders. Ursuline was led by the young back court of Taylor Brown who had 17 points and Jazelle (GG) Banks with 21. Skylar Bolden of Ursuline was able to control the inside with a double double of 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Anthony Emma scored 11 points connecting on three 3 pointers from behind the arc.

Ursuline’s pressing defense and fast scoring just out paced the Blue Raiders as they came away with a 62-47 victory to advance to the state championship. Woodbridge was led by Reghan Robinson as she scored 20 points hitting four 3 pointers.  Lyanna Mims added 8 points, with Peyton Keeler and Delaney Larrimore each added 5.

Sanford played the late game as they faced off with the No. 5 seed Caravel. Sanford was able to have their way with the Buccaneers winning in a dominant fashion. Sanford was able to hold Caravel to single digit scoring in each quarter of the game while they shot 14% from the floor. The defense was imposing as the Buccaneers were never able to get their offense going.

Offensively for Sanford they had a very balanced scoring game with four players in double digits and one player 1 point away. Zy Kilgore and Dallas Pierce each totaled 14 points, Tyler Edwards added 11, Zoe Kashner added 10, and Jada Snow added 9.

Since these two coaches have taken over at their schools John Noonan at Ursuline and Marcus Thompson at Sanford they have faced off twice in the state championship. Once in 2012 Urslune won 49-29 and the last time was in 2016 as Ursuline edged out Sanford again 39-34.

Sanford and Ursuline will face off this Friday night at the Bob Carpenter center with a start time of 7PM. Tickets will be sold on the Blue Hens website. If you can’t get a tickets you can watch all the games on the NFHS Network.
