MIDDLETOWN — Salesianum bid an emotional farewell to Paul Worrilow Friday night, sending their defensive coordinator off to the New York Jets with a game ball and a strong defensive performance after an early touchdown as the Sals defeated a strong Middletown team by a dominating 38-7 score.

The game took a back seat to saying goodbye to the former Concord High, University of Delaware, and NFL linebacker.

“He studies a lot of film, and he is amazing. He’s the glue that keeps us together and he will be missed,” said Salesianum quarterback Brady McBride.

Paul Worrilow wants a Super Bowl ring

Worrilow told Delaware Live at halftime, “Anybody who knows me knows how much I want to win a Super Bowl sometime in my life…it’s no secret.”

Middletown played without starting quarterback Derian Cunningham, who was injured against Smyrna. Freshman Max Phipps filled in admirably as he led the Cavs to an early 7-0 lead, connecting with Darius Pope on a 26-yard touchdown for their only TD of the game.

Salesianum recovered a fumble near midfield, changing the momentum in the first quarter. Down by seven, the Sals marched downfield, with a 1-yard run by Odell Teel tying the game.

Sallies also scored on an 8-yard run by Aiden Lego and a 19-yard pass from McBride to Noah Hicks to take a 21-7 lead into the half.

Middletown had an opportunity to cut that deficit before halftime as Hanif Miller ran up the middle for 73 yards to the Sals 12, but an interception by Patrick Dillon quashed the drive.

The two defenses dominated the third quarter until the 3:30 mark. The Sals barely converted a fourth-and-four at the Cavalier 21-yard line. On the next play, McBride threw a perfect strike to Micks in the back of the end zone.

Micks’ spectacular one-hand reception gave Salesianum a 28-7 advantage.

“I’ve been grinding with Noah since freshman year,” McBride said after the game. “We work on that double move in practice. He made a jab at the goal line and did a great job of grabbing the ball.”

The Sals scored twice in the final quarter on a 5-yard pass from McBride to Gavin Toto and a 25-yard field goal by William Christopher. Salesianum outgained Middletown 423-to-200 in total yardage. McBride passed for 205 yards and 3 touchdowns, while Aiden Lego gained 72 yards on the ground, Odell Teel added 68, and Jaysir Gaymon had 64.

The Sals improved to 7-1 (3-0 in District play) and will host Hodgson next Friday night at Abessinio Stadium. Middletown fell to 6-2 (3-1) and will travel to St. Mark’s on November 1. The Cavs finish the regular season against cross-district rival Appoquinimink.
