BEAR — Division I powerhouse Salesianum Sals overwhelmed Division II Caravel in a late-season matchup at Bob Peoples Stadium, cruising to a 6-1 victory by scoring three goals in each half.
The first goal of the game for Sallies was an own goal off the foot of a Caravel player. With seven minutes to go in the first half, Sals forward Tyler Cifa scored on a penalty kick. He took his time approaching the ball and buried it in the lower left-hand corner as Caravels goalie Yusef Boland dove to the right.
The Sals struck just minutes later when Joseph Turtoro found a loose ball in front of the goal. Turtoro took two dribbles to his right, then kicked it past the diving Boland in the right corner of the net. Salesianum took a 3-0 lead into the half.
The second half was like the first half for the Sals. The scoring got started by defenseman Daniel Matthews, who got the ball on the right side of the goal and took a strong shot that went top shelf over the outstretched arms of Yusef for a 4-0 lead.
Caravel scored their lone goal minutes after the Matthews goal. Caravel was awarded a corner kick as they sent Liam Boland to the corner to take the kick for the Buccaneers. Liam kicked a perfect pass in front of the net in which defenseman Jacob Wojciechowski headed the ball past the diving Sals keeper Thomas DeRosa. Wojciechowski and his teammates celebrated the rare opportunity as the sals did. They handed him the ball and allowed him to run it back to midfield.
Salesianum received their second penalty kick after the Caravel goal. Freshman Bryan Perez-Herrera took his shot, but the Bucs goalie dove to make the save.
Caravel’s celebration was short-lived. Another Sals freshman, Kellan MacMillian, took a pass in front of the net and shot it past the diving Buccaneers goalie for the fifth goal of the game. With just seconds remaining on the clock, Gabriel Guzman-Jimenez knocked in the final goal of the game to seal the victory.
Salesianum improves to 7-4-1 on the season, while Caravel falls to 9-4. Both teams will be in the postseason in their prospective divisions, competing for a state championship.
