The Port Penn Interpretive Center will not open this summer because of safety concerns after structural damage was discovered.
DNREC’s Division of Parks and Recreation said the damage was discovered as the center was being readied for summer.
The center is typically open on weekends and holidays during the summer.
Even though the site is closed, according to the center’s website it will host a wetland trail walk on Saturday, June 3.
The Division of Parks did not respond to questions about the building.
While refreshing the center’s exhibits for the upcoming season at some point, the division discovered issues with the building and ordered a structural study that revealed the building is not safe for occupancy.
The study, which has not been publicly released, revealed deterioration of the center’s first-floor framing and foundation, which affected the roof and attic.
Repairs will include a new foundation, replacement of the first-floor framing and moisture mitigation measures to prevent future issues.
It is unclear at this time what caused the structural issues with the building or how much the repairs will cost.
Programs and self-guided walking tours will resume once the structure re-opens.
The Port Penn Interpretive Center, about four miles south of Delaware City, operated as a schoolhouse from 1886 to 1961.
