The high school football season kicked off the season on Thursday night and what a great weekend of football the first state treated to.
Hodgson 21 Howard 6: The Silver Eagles scored the final 21 points to defeat vo tech rival on Thursday afternoon. Brysheem Davis had a pair of touchdowns, a 30 yard reception and then a 37 yard pick six that sealed the win in the final minutes. Xavier Brown threw two touchdown passes and also completed a 2 point pass. Amir Maddey gave Howard a 6-0 lead with a 64 yard scamper late in the first quarter.
Middletown 16 Red Bank Catholic (NJ) 14: The 3A Cavs defend the 302 with a huge win over Red Bank who is a defending New Jersey state champion.
Caesar Rodney 17 William Penn 0: The Riders picked up the home win to open the season. Josiah Everett completed 18 of 33 passes for 182 yards. Mark Moore caught 6 passes for 80 yards to lead the offense.
Sussex Central 41 Laurel 20: After the Bulldogs tied it at 20, the Golden Knights scored the last 21 points to pull away for the Victory. Malik Bell led the way with 24 Carries 208 Yards rushing and 2 Touchdowns for Sussex Central.
Cape Hen;open 20 Red Lion 13: The 3A Vikings held off a rally from the 2A Lions. The Vikings lead 14-0 at halftime as Jameson Tingle threw a touchdown pass, He added a second touchdown pass in the fourth with 2:06 left. Evan Budinger scored on a QB sneak with 1:05 left but the Vikings recovered the onside kick. Budinger finished 10-18 for 161 yards and the one rushing touchdown
Sallies 34 Episcopal Academy (PA) 13: The defending 3A state champs came out with a packed student section on Thursday night but finished the game with a handful of students on a cloudy Friday afternoon. Jasir Gaymon had over 300 total yards including an opening 65 yard kickoff return to set up an Odell Teel 4 yard touchdown run, then a 70 yard punt return to set up another short touchdown run, this one by Aiden Leggo. Gaymon had 10 catches for 135 yards and 175 yards on his returns The Sals lead 14-7 at the half and then the storms rolled in and the game was suspended to the next afternoon. Brady McBride threw a pair of touchdowns in the second half and finished 23-31 for 239 yards, 2 touchdowns, and one interception. The Sals scored 3 times in the second half to pull away.
Milford 20 Mount Pleasant 6: The Bucs headed North to Claymont and headed back home with a victory over the Green Knights. Gregg Lockett carried the load of the offense including scoring all 3 of their touchdowns. The Bucs ball control offense in the first half helped lead them to a 7-0 lead as Lockett scored early in the second quarter. He added another score in the third quarter for a 13-0 lead. Camyron Wright had a touchdown pass for the Knights.
