Coach Phil Lewis remembered -- Maya Lewis

Delaware Military Academy (DMA) held a basketball tournament in memory of longtime boys basketball coach Phillip “Phil” Hill, who passed away in November 2023 at age 58. The tournament featured boys’ and girls’ basketball games, and both DMA varsity teams participated. Both teams came away with a win to sweep the doubleheader.

The girls’ varsity team defeated Tower Hill 47-42 in an overtime thriller that saw none other than Phil Hill’s daughter, Maya, shine in the victory. Maya scored 19 points to lead her team but added seven steals, six rebounds, and four assists to lead DMA.

The boys’ team defeated Christiana 55-40. They were led by Jaxon Lennon, who scored 15 points, with Sean O’Connor adding 14 points and Shannon Cowan adding 12, giving DMA three scores in double digits.

Coach Phil Hill (1965-2023)

Between the games, the school honored coach Phil Hill in front of his family, friends, and fans in Phil Hill t-shirts. DMA Athletic Director Jeremy Jeanne gave a great speech about Phil in front of the Hill Family. Mrs Hill, Tyler, Trevor, and Maya all had seats behind Jeremy as they honored Coach Hill.

After the speeches, Jeremy gave a big box to the Hill family from DMA containing a chair dedicated to Coach Hill that will be the coach’s chair during games. DMA also added Coach Hill’s name to the gym floor inside the Fusco Dome.

Hill served as head coach for nine years before retiring. A Salesianum alum, a runner-up state champ in basketball, and a passionate coach, Phil was widely remembered for his time as an officer with the New Castle County Police Department. He began his career in September 1989 and retired as a lieutenant in April 2013 after 24 years of dedicated service. During his time with the Division of Police, Lieutenant Hill was assigned to the Patrol Division, the Criminal Investigations Unit, and the Professional Standards Unit.

After his retirement, Lieutenant Hill continued his career in law enforcement by serving with the State Attorney General’s Office and the Department of Justice. He was most recently employed as the Major of Public Safety at Christiana Care. Phil’s impact on our community will be remembered with gratitude and profound respect.
