WILMINGTON – For the third straight year, the Wilmington Police Department will hold a Thanksgiving Turkey Drive to benefit city residents in need.

The event will be held on Sunday, Nov. 24, from 1-4 p.m. at 300 North Walnut Street.

“This annual turkey drive is a wonderful example of how our police officers work each day to help support and uplift our residents,” said Chief Wilfredo Campos. “I am proud of programs like this and the initiative that our officers take to assist residents.”

The police will also accept donations of canned goods.

In the two years the department has had this drive, it’s donated about 300 turkey-with-fixings kits.

The kits include other food items for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner like canned vegetables or tins for cooking the turkeys.

“Through the assistance of our community partners, we have been able to put together a list of community members in need and have a set number of turkeys, etc. set aside for those families,” said department spokesman Cpl. Daniel Rice. “We will also distribute to others who are not on the list but have prioritized those we have already identified and will distribute any additional supplies based on availability.”

Other community partners include ShopRite and the Kenny Family Foundation.

“We are very grateful to WPD and the residents of Wilmington for their support of our family and business over the years,” said Melissa Kenny, chairwoman of the Kenny Family Foundation and executive VP of Delaware Supermarkets, Inc. “We are excited to have this opportunity, thanks to WPD, to help more people eat well and be happy on Thanksgiving.”

The police ask that any families not on its list that wish to come are residents of the city of Wilmington.
