The 1st Round of the 2021 DIAA Softball Tournament continued today as the teams in action hoped to advance to the “sweet 16” on Saturday. 

#19 Seaford 7 – #14 William Penn 1

In New Castle, 19th seed Seaford advanced with a 7-1 win over the 14-seed William Penn. The Blue Jays broke open a close 1-1 game in the top of the 5th scoring 4 runs. Lillie Larimore had a double and 3 RBI’s while winning pitcher Jada Evans scattered 3 hits and recorded 15 strikeouts as Seaford will face the winner of Caravel-MOT Charter in Saturday’s 2nd Round. Pitcher Madelyn Pritchard struck out 11 batters for the Colonials. 

#9 Appoquinimink 14 – #24 Indian River 8

Indian River scored 5 runs to open the game, but the Jaguars answered with 5 of their own to tie the game after 1 inning. The Jags would add 4 runs in each of the next two innings to push the lead to 13-6 on their way to a final of 14-8. Maddie Olivas led the 17-hit attack with 3 hits and 5 RBI’s. Jillian Dawson and Kate Taylor each added 3 hits for the Jags while Lilly Papellas had 2 hits and 3 RBI’s. Hailey Watlington and Maddie Bauerle both collected 2 hits. The Indians were paced by Samantha Derickson with 4 RBI’s. Appo will meet the #8 seed Red Lion Christian Academy on Saturday.

#8 Red Lion Christian 4 – #25 Conrad 0

Angelina Edwards fired a 1-hit shutout with 8 strike outs going the distance for the win. The game was close as Conrad trailed just 1-0 entering the 6th inning and pitcher Bella McKee had allowed just 3 hits. Maiti Meginniss led off the red Lion 6th with a single, Regan Mendick followed with a double and Raven Lieske homered to centerfield to make the score 4-0 and that’s how it would end. Peyton Pusey led Red Lion with 2 hits. Red Lion will host Appoquinimink Saturday.

#13 St. Mark’s 4 – #20 Wilmington Charter 0

The Spartans ace pitcher Ryleigh Thomas went the distance recording 17 strikeouts to get the win. It’s her first action in the circle after missing 5 of the last 6 games and throwing 1 inning in the final game of the season. St. Marks will face the winner of the Laurel-Archmere game in Saturday’s 2nd round.

#7 Caesar Rodney 10 – #26 St. George’s Tech 0 (6 innings)

The Riders got a stellar pitching performance from Peyton Shields in a 1-hit shutout with 8 strikeouts. Stacey Deputy scored 3 runs and collected 2 hits while Lyric Abdul-Rasheed had 3 RBI’s to lead the Riders offense. Caesar Rodney will meet Delmarva Christian Saturday in the round of 16.

#10 Delmarva Christian 10 – #23 Sussex Academy 2 

Sophomore pitcher Lilli Showacre allowed 1 earned run, struck out 13 batters and collected 2 hits and 2 RBI’s to lead the Royals into the 2nd round. Candice Schlabach led the Royals at the plate with 3 hits and 4 RBI’s while Lydia Woods added 2 hits and 2 RBI’s. Paige Tidwell led the Seahawks with 2 hits. Delmarva Christian will meet Caesar Rodney Saturday as the original field of 37 teams will have been paired down to the final 16.

#21 Newark Charter 11 – #12 Concord 3

Newark Charter will meet the winner of the Smyrna-St. Elizabeth game on Saturday.
