Del Vets wins American Legion state championship

Delvets defeated Stahl Post 30 in a commanding victory to take home the American Legion state championship. Del vets used a double digit scoring inning to go with a strong pitching performance to capture the win. 

 

In the fourth inning, already leading 5-2 Del Vets scored twelve runs on six hits in the inning to put the game away. Matt Spiecher did the most damage in the inning hitting a double to score two runs, then later knocked in another on an RBI single. Tre Villanova, Andrew Firko, Ryan Timmons and Michael Smyth all had hits in the inning. 

 

Del Vets starting pitcher Jack Rossi had all the run support he needed to secure the victory. Rossi threw all five innings to get the win allowing five hits, three runs two earned, walking three batters and striking out two. Rossi was named MVP pitcher of the tournament with 2 wins and made a relief appearance as well for Del Vets. 

 

Spiecher was named offensive MVP as he went 3-3 on the day scoring four runs while knocking in five. Smyth also went 3-2 scoring one run while knocking in two. Del Vets totaled fourteen hits as a team in the championship game. 

 

Shawn Roy led Stahl Post going 1-2 scoring a run and knocking in two more. Peyton Brannock, Brandon Grygo, Garrett Overby and Sawyer Mezzatesta each added a hit a piece. 

 

Del Vets now advances to the Mid-Atlantic Regional tournament with the 17-3 victory. The games are set to start August 7th Joe Cannon Stadium in Ridge, MD. Del Vets first game is scheduled for game 3 of the day as they face off with Maryland’s state champ at 4:30pm.
