Delaware residents line up for COVID-19 tests at Wilmington University.
New COVID-19 cases continue to drop from holiday highs as Delaware launches its mass vaccinations this weekend as well as 36 pop-up testing sites next week in Delaware.
The seven-day average of new positive cases decreased to 652 as of Thursday, Jan. 21, down from more than 1,000 per day at its peak, according to the Division of Public Health.
The seven-day average for the percentage of persons who tested positive was 23.8%, a slight increase from the week before, with the seven-day average for the percentage of total tests at 9.1%, an increase from 8.6%.
In addition, 420 people are hospitalized, down 31 as of last week. Fifty-nine of those are considered critical.
Of the 73,233 positive cases, 1,027 Delawareans have died, with another 25 reported this week.
As the state focuses on vaccines, it plans to give shots to 13,500 people from Friday through Sunday, most of them residents over the age of 65.
A total of 85,000 had requested vaccinations through the state’s registration system as of 4 p.m. Friday.
As of midnight Jan. 21, 54,760 administered doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been reported.

Covid testing
While officials say it can take 72 hours to get a result back, one test result take at 10:30 a.m. Monday Wilmington University’s Athletic Complex was back by 10 a.m. Tuesday.
This list includes pop-up and Curative trailerĀ sites, as well as communityĀ sitesĀ hosted by New Castle County and Henrietta Johnson Medical Center.
Tests are also available at Walgreens in every county, at various hospitals and health care locations. As of Thursday, Delaware Walgreens had given 100,000 tests to state residents.
