A plethora of college scholarships are available for Delaware students.

A plethora of college scholarships are available for Delaware students.

Dozens of First State prospective college students are receiving financial help through scholarships.

Some scholarships have already been granted while others are expected to be awarded soon, and hundreds of thousands of dollars in financial aid is distributed throughout the process from private groups and public state agencies.

Here are some of the notable scholarships already awarded: 

Herman M. Holloway Sr. Memorial Scholarship – Richard Smith Jr, Caesar Rodney 

This scholarship is for high school seniors with an unweighted cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 and a combined score of at least 1000 on the SAT or the equivalent score on the ACT. 

It’s exclusively for students who will attend full-time at Delaware State University. It includes full tuition and fees, room, board and books.

The scholarship is renewable  for up to three additional years with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0.

It is named after Herman M. Holloway, a 30-year Democrat state legislator who died in 1994.


Bradford Barnes Memorial Scholarship – Leana Griffin, Newark Charter School

This scholarship is for high school seniors with an unweighted cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 and a combined score of 1290 on the SAT or an equivalent score on the ACT.

It’s only for students who will enroll full-time at the University of Delaware.

It also covers full tuition and fees, room, board and books at the University of Delaware and is renewable for up to three additional years with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0.

It is named after B. Bradford Barnes, former Republican speaker of the Delaware House of Representatives, who died in 1987,


Samuel A. Green Scholarship Program:

$20,000 for Charlotte Elizabeth Walder, Odyssey Charter High School

$15,000 for Anna Marie Kasper, Middletown High School

$15,000 for Ashiyana J Patel, Concord High School

$10,000 for Nathan H Cho, Conrad Schools of Science

Recipients were selected based on their written responses to a topic that is rooted in the mission of the foundation: “How will you use your college education to make a substantial impact in your community?” along with a letter of recommendation.

The scholarship is funded by the Green Family Foundation and Firstrust Bank.

The Green Family Foundation invests in organizations that possess capable and courageous leadership, innovative approaches to addressing social problems and a fierce commitment to making a substantial impact.

Its mission is to help the community meet basic human needs such as food, water, shelter, education and healthcare.

The scholarship program is named in memory of Firstrust Bank Founder, Samuel A. Green. It is eligible to those high school seniors who plan to be a full-time student at a community or four-year, not-for-profit, accredited college or university. The money awarded is spread out over the scholar’s first two years of college.


National Honor Society Scholarships – Puiyee Kong, Caesar Rodney

Kong won a $5,625 scholarship recognizes students who exemplify the four pillars of National Honor Society: scholarship, service, leadership and character

The group awards $2 Million in scholarships each year.


Mária Telkes Scholarship – Jordan Myrick, Ursuline Academy

Telkes Scholars are selected for their potential research, innovation and discovery in areas such as education, natural sciences, business and health sciences. 

They’re named in honor of Mária Telkes, a University of Delaware scientist known as the “Sun Queen” for her pioneering solar energy research. 

Telkes Scholars receive $15,000 per year for Delaware residents, for four years of study.


Other scholarships

Alison May, public information officer at the Department of Education, pointed out that the Delaware Higher Education Office also awarded 41 students for the Charles L. Hebner Memorial Scholarship.

That scholarship is $1,250 per year and is renewable for three years.

Eligibility requirements include being a high school senior with an unweighted cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 and a score of at least 1290 on the SAT or equivalent score on the ACT.

They must be enrolled as full-time students in an undergraduate degree program at the University of Delaware. 

May said the Career-Based Scholarship ($5,000 per year), Educator Support Scholarship ($5,000 per year) and Scholarship Incentive Program ($1,000 per year) winners will be named by early August.

How far does the scholarship go?

*in-state / out-of-state student per full-time semester, including tuition, fees, room and board

**does not include meal plan fees, which vary widely by college and by plan

University of Delaware: $14,822 / $26,082 

A semester of tuition and fees at the UD costs $7,705 per semester for in-state residents and $18,965 for out-of-state residents. Standard housing for room and board for all students is $7,117. 

Delaware State University: $10,072 / $15,033

A semester of tuition and fees at DSU is $5,476.50 for in-state students and $10,437.50 for out-of-staters. The average cost of housing is $4,595.38.

Delaware Technical Community College: $2,332.50 / $5,763.75

In-state tuition and fees cost $2,332.50 and out-of-state costs $5,763.75. Del Tech does not offer on-campus housing. 

Wilmington University does not charge a flat tuition rate for semesters. Instead, they charge a per credit rate, depending on which campus a student attends and the type of course taken.

For an undergraduate student taking 18 credits in a semester at WilmU’s New Castle campus, tuition would be $7,362 per semester.
