The Caravel Buccaneers girls basketball team is the No. 1 seed in this year’s Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Associations (DIAA) girls basketball state championship. Even after suffering a season ending loss to No. 6 seed Sanford Warriors the Buccaneers still had the most points based on the formula used by the DIAA to determine seedings..

With Caravel on the top side of the bracket are No. 4 Padua Pandas, No.5 Ai duPont Tigers and the No. 8 Appoquinimink Jaguars. Both Caravel and Padua the high seeds defeated the Pandas and the Jags, but they did not face off against each other in the regular season. So if both teams advance it will create a semifinal game to watch.

The bottom side of the bracket is loaded with strong teams. The No. 2 Ursuline Raiders are the top seed on this side of the bracket along with No. 3 St Elizabeth Vikings, No. 6 Sanford Warriors, and No. 7 Delmarva Christian Royals.

Ursuline and Sanford both defeated St Elizbeths this season, while Sanford defeated Ursuline when they faced off. None of the teams have faced off with the Royals who went 18-1 this season with their only loss coming to an out of state team. However the Royals really didn’t play many of the top teams in the state so we will see if they are ready to face some of the top teams this side of the bracket has to offer.

Last year’s championship game between Ursuline and Sanford can not be a repeat since these two teams, if they advance, will face off in the semifinal game. Which I’d say is a must watch game.

Other teams to keep an eye on in the bottom side of the bracket is Cape Henlopen, who was the No. 3 seed in last year’s tournament. They have talent, they just haven’t had a great season so they are a scary No. 18 seed if they can put a run together. Also Woodbridge who advanced to the semifinals last season, and have one of  if not the top scorers in the state.

Wednesday is the start of the DIAA girls basketball state championship as the first round kicks off. Be sure to go out and check out some of the games since it will be the last game of the season for some teams. It should be a fun tournament this season with plenty of teams having a chance to walk away with a state championship.
