The 10-1 Delcastle Cougars traveled to Wilmington Charter Thursday afternoon to take on the 8-2 Force. who was carrying an eight-game win streak into the match after starting off the season with two straight losses.
Now it’s a nine-game winning streak.
The Force scored early and often, leading 4-0 after 20 minutes and then scoring twice more in the second half to easily win 6-0.
Delcastle’s record was 10-1 entering the game, with their only loss coming to Appoquinimink High School in September.
Charter standout Mike Capretto found open space with the ball at his feet 20 yards from net. After looking for a teammate to cross the ball to, he decided to take his chances on his own and ripped a shot into the side netting, catching the Delcastle keeper leaning away toward the far post for Charter’s 4th goal of the first half. Capretto added a second goal in the second half as he settled a ball with his chest in the midfield, turned the corner, outran the Delcastle defender, and scored from inside the penalty area through a tight window.
The scoring started as off the first corner of the game in the fourth minute. Charter’s Davin Lysik took the kick but then got it right back off a defensive header. His second attempt at the cross was headed into the side netting by Louis Miller past the jumping Delcastle keeper. The Force struck again just three minutes later with a spectacular goal by Lachlan Raffan on a bicycle kick with his back to the goaltender. Just two minutes later, Lysik gave the Force a 3-0 lead past the diving keeper.
Louis Miller would get on the score sheet in the second half, after carrying the ball to just outside the 18-yard box before carefully placing a shot past the Cougar keeper.
Delcastle’s best scoring opportunity came in the form of a penalty kick in the first half, which hit the post and eventually went over the crossbar out of bounds. The Cougars will look to bounce back as they travel to William Penn next Tuesday, while the Force will look to impose their will on the Spartans at Saint Mark’s on Tuesday.
