Beebe Healthcare’s vascular surgery team recently marked a major milestone, with successful completion of its 150th Transcarotid Artery Revascularization (TCAR) procedure.
TCAR is a minimally invasive surgical procedure, performed to remove blockages in a patient’s carotid artery, which ultimately reduces risk for stroke. It is the ideal procedure for many patients with a buildup of plaque inside the blood vessels leading to the brain, known as carotid artery disease. Reduced blood flow to the brain, ruptured plaque, and blood clots that cause blockages need to be addressed medically before they result in stroke. Beebe was the first in Sussex County to offer this innovative procedure to patients.
“We are proud to have a team of clinical providers who are trained to offer this advanced vascular procedure for patients who otherwise are at increased risk for stroke,” said Thomas Trobiano, DNP, FNP-C, MAPC, Executive Director of Beebe Healthcare’s Cardiovascular and Neurosciences Services. “This is an important milestone for our team. It demonstrates our progress and that this level of sophisticated care is in fact crucial here in Sussex County.”
This announcement comes at a time when stroke awareness, education, and prevention are top of mind for many. The American Heart Association, along with hospitals and healthcare systems across the country, recognize May as “Stroke Awareness Month.”
