Barclays Delaware layoffs

Barclays Delaware lays off two dozen Wilmington workers on Monday

Barclays laid off at least two dozen people from its Wilmington office on Oct. 21, but the bank remained closed-lipped about the level of the roles, the jobs they did, and the reason behind the decision.

“We regularly review our operations to ensure we have the most effective and efficient model to best serve our customers and clients,” said a Barclays spokesman. “Following a recent review, a limited number of roles in our U.S. consumer business were made redundant. These decisions are never easy, and employees whose roles have been impacted will receive a full range of transition services. We continue to execute on our strategy and growth ambitions.”

The office on the Wilmington waterfront is home to the U.S. division of Barclays, the credit card and payment group, and its online business, according to the bank’s website.

It’s late October, but it does feel a bit like Groundhog Day. It was nearly a year to the day that Reuters reported that Barclays plc was laying off “dozens of staff in its U.S. consumer banking division as part of a global drive to cut costs.” The comment from a spokesman then was not dissimilar to the one provided today:

“We review our business on a regular basis to ensure we are operating as effectively and efficiently as possible,” a spokesperson for Barclays said in a statement at the time. “These decisions are never easy, and employees whose roles have been impacted will receive a full range of transition services.”
