Both the number of total positive COVID-19 cases and the number of positive tests in Delaware are climbing again, while the number of cases involving variant strains rose by half in the last week.
Because of that, Gov. John Carney and Delaware health officials are urging people to continue wearing masks and following mitigation guidelines, and to continue being tested so the state can try to quickly stop any outbreaks.
The stats
A total of 95,590 Delaware residents have had positive tests.
The seven-day average for the percentage of persons who tested positive for COVID-19 was 23.4% Thursday, up from 20.1% last week.
The seven-day average for the percentage of total tests that were positive was 5.5%, up from 4.3% a week before.
141 individuals are currently hospitalized due to COVID-19, up 25 from the week before. Sixteen are in critical condition.
1,565 Delawareans have died from COVID-19.
COVID variant cases
The Division of Public Health has said that about 4% of the positive cases it’s randomly testing show a strain of a more infectious case.
That includes:
United Kingdom B.1.1.7, 41 cases.
South Africa B.1.351, 1 case.
California B.1.427, 4 cases.
California B.1.429, 7 cases.
New York B.1.525, 1 case.
New York B.1.526, 54 cases.
identified the following COVID-19 variants in Delaware through routine surveillance of test specimens. These variants are based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) list of Variants of Concern and Variants of Interest.
In aggregate, the cases include 87 adults ranging in age from 18-84, as well as 18 individuals under the age of 18. Seventy-five people were from New Castle County, 17 were from Kent County and 14 were from Sussex County. The county of residence is currently unknown for two individuals.
The Delaware Public Health Laboratory has sequenced 1,338 specimens for COVID-19 variant strains to date, including 184 within the past week.

COVID-19 vaccinations
As of Thursday morning, 483,328 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered. A total of 474,820 doses have been delivered to the state, and 119,175 doses have been delivered as part of the federal provider programs.
Mask guidelines for athletes
Gov. John Carney on Thursday revised his COVID-19 emergency order for the ninth time to update mask and other health requirements for youth and amateur sports. They include:
Athletes participating in high-risk sports must wear a face covering at all times. That includes hockey, basketball, tackle football, boys’/men’s lacrosse, wrestling, boxing, rugby, competitive cheer, martial arts, ultimate frisbee and pairs figure skating.
Athletes participating in non-high-risk sports outdoors must wear face coverings, except when actively engaged in practice or game play while on the field. That includes The includes singles tennis, golf, individual running and swimming, pickleball, disc golf, individual biking, surfing, horseback riding, individual sailing, fishing, hunting, motor sports, singles rowing, baseball, softball, field hockey, girls’/women’s lacrosse, soccer, flag or 7-on-7 football, team running, running clubs and track and field, team swimming, rowing (other
than with household members), sailing, volleyball, dance class, fencing, and gymnastics.
Athletes from different households must adhere to social distancing and remain six feet apart, except when actively engaged in practice or game play while on the field.
All coaches, staff, and refereesmust wear face coverings at all times, including while addressing players or officials on or off the field, when coaching during the game, and during practices, trainings and team meetings.
Masks continue to be required at all times for all indoor sports and activities. This applies to athletes, coaches, staff, and spectators.
