The No. 4 seed Archmere Auks girls soccer team upset No. 1 Caravel in the Division II Girls Soccer State Championship by a score of 2-1 Wednesday night at Caravel.

After both teams were held scoreless in the first half Atchmere got on the scoreboard first. Christina Rosebaum of Archmere made a great pass on a through ball that Emma Gioffe won the race to against two Caravel defenders for a break away goal to break the tie and take a 1-0 lead.

A few minutes later Caravel was awarded a penalty kick as a foul occurred in the goalie box. Alaina Alston stepped up to the penalty kick line and hit a shot into the upper right corner, giving Archmere’s goalkeeper Gabriella Fernandez no shot at making a save to tie the game up at 1-1.

After 78 minutes and 30 seconds were played the game was tied at 1-1, but a penalty inside the goal box sent Gioffe to the penalty kick line for Archmere to take a free kick one on one against Caravel’s goalie Taylor Fitzgerald.

Emma lined up to get ready, the whistle was blown and as she approached the ball for the kick she noticed Fitzgerald leaning to her right so she went left depositing the ball into the back of the net to give Archmere the lead with 1 minute and 30 seconds remaining in the game and her second goal.

Archmere was able to keep the ball away from Caravel for the remainder of the game holding on to the 2-1 victory. Archmere advances to the state championship which will be played this Friday June 2nd at Delaware State University. They will face the No. 2 seed Saint Mark’s Spartans at 6pm.
