Tuesday’s flirtation with spring – blue skies, fluffy clouds, a high of 63 in Georgetown (50 in New Castle County) and the rare flower already in bloom – is being taken over by predictions for bad weather.

The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook through tonight for New Castle County, followed by a winter storm watch from late Wednesday through Friday afternoon. “Heavy mixed precipitation possible. Total snow and sleet accumulations of 3 to 6 inches and ice accumulations of one-tenth to one quarter of an inch possible. … Travel could be very difficult.”

The chance of precipitation is 40% Wednesday night, 100% Thursday, 90% Thursday night and 80% Friday, the government agency said. Sleet, ice, snow and rain are all part of the wintry mix on the way.

The forecast for Kent and Sussex is similar but as usual for Delawware, a little warmer and a little less severe. There’s no hazardous outlook for tonight downstate, but there is that multiday storm watch.

When faced with a similar forecast last week, the Delaware Department of Transportation postponed the start of its massive Restore the Corridor project on I-95 in Wilmington.

Bad weather is also likely to affect mass outdoor vaccination efforts, and it so far delayed one in Dover.

The Weather Channel says this storm will stretch from New Mexico to Maine and agrees on the intensity, but it hedges on what type of precipitation will fall on the Interstate 95 corridor.

AccuWeather is predicting only 2 to 4 inches of snow in Delaware, with meteorologist Bernie Rayno predicting  “just a real mess to many areas of the country,” including parts inland that have been hit hard over the last few days.
