Because of high winds expected with rain Saturday, The Grand and its partners have cancelled the Winter in Wilmington Light Show for Saturday only.
New Castle County will go ahead with its drive-thru lights at Rockwood Park, although visitors will see fewer costumed characters because they can’t be out in the rain.
The Grand said in a letter to ticket buyers Friday afternoon that tickets already bought for Saturday will be refunded, and patrons could buy them again on another night.
“We ask that you consider purchasing another night to help support The Grand,” the email said. Here’s the link.
Winds were expected to be heavy and in excess of 25 mph, the letter said, and the sponsors want to keep patrons safe.
The show is set up in parking lot near the outfields at Frawley Stadium, easily visible from Interstate 95. Visitors drive a route among 40 displays that have no shielding, including go under several arches.
At the Rockwood Park drive-thru, Santa will still appear, but he’ll be in a protective tent, said Brian Cunningham, spokesman for the county.
The county turned two annual events, including the traditional open house at Rockwood, into free Merry & Bright Holiday Lights drive-thrus featuring the lights. Rockwood Park is Friday, Dec. 4; Saturday, Dec. 5; and Sunday, Dec. 6. Glasgow Park will welcome drive-thrus on Dec. 11 and 12.
The weekend events run from 6-9 p.m. each night. Holiday Lights will remain on in the evening at both locations through the end of December for drive-thru viewing. but without Santa and other characters.
