On Wednesday, July 20, Milford High School (MHS) announced that 29 current students or recent graduates from MHS have earned the designation of AP Scholar by the College Board. The honor recognizes their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement (AP) Exams. The AP exams were held in May of 2014 after students completed the challenging, yearlong, college-level AP courses offered at MHS. Exams are scored on a scale of 1–5 with 5 being the highest possible score.
“This recognition is actually from College Board itself. It is an international standard that schools all over the world use to measure students achievement. More importantly though it represents the culmination of a lot of hard work and dedication from teachers and students,” said MHS Principal Shawn Snyder. “ Every one of these students elected to take these courses, some of the most challenging courses a high school students can take in any high school. That desire and work ethic is something to celebrate.”
Six students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. These students are: Molly Fulton, Starr Henry, Jason Kalaygian, Michael Saxon, Clayton Stevenson, and Maura West. Fewer than 3 percent of all graduating high school seniors achieve this honor.
Nine students qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. There students are: Summer Arthurs, Hunter Bradford, Caleb Chandler, Valeria Coverdale, Brielle Hermstedt, Sara Lingo, Stephanie Miller, Eric Nielsen, Silas Wheedleton.
Fourteen students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP Examinations, with grades of 3 or higher. These students are: Kerline Aures, Dylan Garcie, Alexa Gorman, Dante Harris, Michael Herholdt, Dylan Hiligoss, Sean Hinton, Joshua Layton, Emilee Milton, Alyse Ritzler, LeighAnne Rossetti, Saathi Shah, Cara Warren, and Tyler Webb.
They are basically 101 level or higher college courses. This means that students are taking their freshman college courses in high school,” said Snyder. “In a college 101 course, you often have to make an appointment with your professor if you have a question. At Milford High School, these classes are taught by very talented teachers in classes much smaller than their college counterparts. Most of the students who complete an AP class come back and tell us that they were.”
This year MHS had 151 students take 316 AP exams. Coupled with MHS’s college dual enrollment courses, students had an opportunity to complete over 1300 college credits this year. Milford High School offers six dual enrollment courses and 13 AP courses. Student success rates on these courses are above state and national averages. Congratulations to all of the MHS AP Scholars for this phenomenal achievement.
