After Prom a Huge Success

The Milford High School’s After Prom was a huge success with 240 students in attendance. This year’s prom took place at Dover Downs’ Diamond Room with a theme of “Starry Night.” The hope is that everyone who attended prom and wants to continue the fun, does so in a safe and supervised alternative, like After Prom, instead of choosing to attend private parties where drugs and alcohol are statistically present.

The After Prom tradition continued as the junior class parents formed committees to organize this event for their children & their friends. The committee was comprised of a fantastic group, headed by Co-chairs Carrie Shockley and Nicki Melvin. The decoration committee included Erin & Rob Roach, along Jody Roberts and Jen Hazzard. The food committee included Lisa Ell and Renee Eadie, along with Denise Swain.

The entertainment committee included Dawn & TH Leighty, Karen & Scott Esposito and Cathy & Ken Wolfe. The donation/prize committee included Cathy Rogers & Dawn Kimmel. This year’s theme was “A Night at the Boardwalk” and the party lasted until 2am. This ambitious group of parents began this adventure in January and they met weekly up until the week of prom determining how to accomplish the task at hand.

Several fundraisers were held to raise money for the event which included a Quarter Auction, organized by Chris Eames & the traditional Operation Flamingo, where property owners are asked to make a donation in order for the yard ornaments, that magically appeared in the middle of the night, to be removed from their yards. And, of course, this event would not take place without the generous donations of local business. These donations provide funds for decorations, food & drinks, & the wonderful array of prizes. Prizes were given every 5 minutes right up until 2am.
The object is to keep the students there as long as possible so the students must be present to win & the prizes get bigger & better as the night goes on. This year’s grand prize for the seniors was $300 in cash and for the juniors it was an Apple watch. Prizes could also be won by correctly answering trivia questions. The donations also provide entertainment, which this year included inflatable obstacle courses, corn hole games and a photo booth.

The students really appeared to enjoy themselves and seemed to appreciate the work that went into providing this event on their behalf. Even though the After Prom committee did not get home from cleaning up the event until almost dawn, all agreed it was worth it to keep the kids safe and happy.

The After Prom Committee would like to thank each of the following businesses & individuals for their support in making the 2016 After Prom a huge success and hope that you continue your support for next year’s event. And, we would like to thank Dale Hammond for his custodial assistance, Dr. Green, Shawn Snyder, Ron Voshell for helping with student check in & to the freshman class officers for helping to set up. And, lastly to all the parents who showed up to set up, chaperone and breakdown the event, we extend a heartfelt thanks & appreciated all the help:
