The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit has been requested by Milford Police Department to investigate a fatal crash involving two vehicles on Milford Bypass (SR1).
The incident occurred around 7:15 a.m. this morning, Tuesday April 19, 2016 as Mario E. Nelson, 58 of Harrington, was operating a 2010 Toyota Corolla eastbound on N. E. Front Street Ext. approaching a stop sign at the intersection with Milford Bypass (SR1). Melissa L. Mallet, 35 of Magnolia, was operating a 2013 Lincoln MKZ southbound on SR1 in the left lane. For unknown reasons, the Corolla failed to remain stopped at the stop sign and entered into the intersection where it was struck on the driver’s side door by the Lincoln’s front bumper. Both vehicles then rotated counter clockwise and the Corolla traveled in a southwest direction where it came to a stop in the grassy median. The Lincoln continued southbound rotating 90 degrees before it came to a stop facing eastbound on the east edge of SR1.
Mario Nelson was properly restrained and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Nelson’s 29-year-old daughter was properly restrained in the passenger’s seat and was flow by Delaware State Police Aviation to Christiana Medical Center where she is currently admitted with non-life-threatening injuries.
Melissa Mallet was properly restrained and was removed from the scene by EMS and transported to Bayhealth Milford Memorial Hospital (MMH) where she was admitted with non-life-threatening injuries. Her 14-year-old son was properly restrained and was also transported to MMH where he was treated and released with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into this incident. Alcohol and speed do not appear to be contributing factors in this case. SR1 southbound was closed at NE 10th Street for approximately four hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
