Abbott’s Grill and Bald Jason’s Pub suffered minor damage Friday morning after a fire broke out in a shed behind the building. The fire destroyed the shed and damaged the restaurant’s banquet room.
“We are not sure yet what caused the fire, but the fire marshall suspects a cigarette may have been dropped near the shed,” said Kevin Reading, owner of Abbott’s Grill. “The health inspector has been here and sees no internal damage that would stop us from opening. The electricians and glass people are here trying to get us up and running again. Everyone has been great.”
According to Ryan Knowles, spokesperson for the fire company, Carlisle Fire Department was dispatched to an outside storage shed on fire behind Abbott’s Grill Restaurant. “Upon arrival, the shed was fully involved and spreading to the rear of the business. Units were able to stop the spread so there was only exterior damage to the rear of the restaurant.” Mr. Knowles said. “A second alarm was dispatched for the incident and the scene was turned over to the Delaware State Fire Marshall’s office for investigation.” There is still no official cause of the fire as it is still being investigated.
Mr. Reading said that he had hoped to be open late Friday, but repairs took longer than expected and the restaurant opened for regular hours on Saturday at 4pm.
“We cannot thank everyone enough,” Mr. Reading said. “We dodged a bullet with this fire as it could have been much worse. Apparently, someone at the state service center saw the fire and called it in or we could have had significantly more damage than we did. I am glad that our closure was short-lived and everything was basically unharmed.”
Mr. Reading was not sure when the fire marshall would be able to determine what the officially caused the fire.
