Bayhealth Recognizes Medical Librarian

22Staff Report

Bayhealth surgeons, physicians, medical students, clinical educators, nurses and nurse practitioners, researchers, and marketing staff all have one thing in common: they need up-to-date information to do their jobs well.
The medical libraries at Bayhealth Kent General and Bayhealth Milford Memorial are managed by Librarian Nadine Pieniaszek, MLS. Employed with Bayhealth for more than 25 years, Pieniaszek has seen the medical libraries change drastically over the years. Once, she organized medical reference books and shelved textbooks; now, the library has gone digital, much like everything else.

Bayhealth employees have access to multiple online resources that provide current information about procedures, medications, procedures, ICD-10 codes, journal articles, and more. “In one online resource alone, we have access to 900 full text journals and over 500 nursing textbooks,” said Pieniaszek.

Pieniaszek’s role at the library is that of a guide; she shows people how to access the resources they need. Physicians email Pieniaszek when they need to find a particular article or learn more about a certain diagnosis. Students like Jessie Carwell, a physician assistant student specializing in general surgery, can come to her for help with research for their educational requirements.

“I do a lot of work with nursing students and fellows,” said Pieniaszek. “I teach people how to find the information they need.”

Outside the library, Pieniaszek is a member of numerous hospital and community based committees that focus on education and research. She organizes Continuing Medical Education (CME) sessions (three per month) and conducts a portion of new employee orientation for newly hired Bayhealth nurses. Bayhealth would like to recognize Nadine Pieniaszek, MLS for her experience, versatility, and dedication over the years.
