Milford Elementary Welcome New Administrators

5By Terry Rogers

As school opened this year, students noticed new faces on the administrative team at two of Milford’s four elementary schools. Ms. Lisa Alfaro has taken over as the Assistant Principal at Benjamin Banneker Elementary, joining Principal Bobbie Kilgore.

Ms. Alfaro has been teaching in Milford School District for over ten years, but it is her 28th year in education. She was a teacher on special assignment for the Delaware Challenge Grant, where she worked with students in grades Kindergarten through sixth grade, integrating technology into the classroom. She has taught second, fourth and fifth grades.

“Being a classroom teacher for 28 years has been very fulfilling,” Ms. Alfaro said. “I have really grown in the profession in the past ten plus years while in Milford School District. While being a fifth grade teacher at Banneker, I have also had the privilege to serve Banneker in other leadership roles such as instructional coach and data coach. This provided more opportunities to work with teachers with curriculum and instruction, so when the position for assistant principal became available, I decided to apply. I am looking forward to expanding my classroom experience to the school experience, working with all students, parents, community members and staff specifically at Banneker, but also in the district. Milford School District has a lot of positive opportunities for teachers, students and parents. I’d like to become more a part of that.”

Ms. Alfaro said that teaching is not like many other careers where it is possible to leave work behind when you go home at the end of the day. She said that her career as an elementary teacher often had her reflecting on lessons past to perfect future lessons. She said she also spent a significant amount of personal time grading papers, searching for alternative teaching methods and creating lesson plans so that all learners became successful and proficient. This has caused balancing work and personal life to be the greatest challenge throughout her career.

Teaching in Milford School District has been the most rewarding, Ms. Alfaro said. She said she feels that Milford is a great community and that she really enjoys working with the students, parents and fellow teachers. As an assisting principal, she hopes to add to the wonderful things she sees happening in the district. She said she is excited to have the opportunity to work with Banneker teachers to continue utilizing the best instructional practices in classrooms.

“I will now expand my horizons from one classroom of students and parents to working with 25-plus classrooms of students and parents,” Ms. Alfaro said. “I am very interested in increasing parent and community involvement at Banneker.”

The district has also hired Assistant Principal Theresa Wallace of Lulu Ross Elementary as  the Principal of Mispillion Elementary after former Principal Susan Donahue resigned over the summer to take another position in a neighboring district.
