MRB Takes Home First At Fair

3Mispillion River Brewing (MRB) of Milford, DE brought home a first and third place finish at the Delaware State Fair’s Battle of the Brews Beer Sampling event on Saturday, July 19. The 4th Annual event for the State Fair, MRB competed against eight other craft brew companies including nationally know Dogfish Head Craft Brewed Ales.

Each of the nine brew companies shared samples of two beers that they chose to highlight for participants in the entertainment tent at the Delaware Fair Grounds in Harrington, DE. Mispillion River Brewing sampled their Mojito beer, a light, cream ale with zest of lime, spearmint and honey, and their Reach Around IPA, an indian pale ale with unusually low bitterness and an elevated hop aroma. Event goers were asked to sample beers from all nine craft companies and to vote on their favorite brew. MRB states that they knew they had a shot at winning by the response they received during the competition.

“We had a lot of positive responses and some repeats that seemed to really enjoy the beer,” commented Eric Williams, owner of Mispillion River Brewing. “A lot of people at the event had already tried our beer at a local restaurant or in our tasting room in Milford.”

Mispillion River Brewery opened its doors in the Milford business park off of Airport Road in Milford, DE last November. Partners Don and Marti Brooks, Scott and Tammy Perlot and Eric and Megan Williams now run the 15 barrel system with the help of their Brewmaster Jared Barnes. New to the business of craft brewing, Williams was honored to place in a competition among what he sees as some of the best craft breweries in the country.

“We were the new guys amongst some very well known, great brewers,” said Williams. “To come out on top was very special for us especially as young as we are.”

In addition to selling their brews on tap at their Milford location and several local pubs and restaurants, MRB has been working behind the scenes to facilitate the process of canning their brews for distribution. They have been partnering with a mobile canning company and this week their first beers, Beach Bum Joe, a pale ale, and Reach Around IPS, an indian pale ale, began appearing in local liquor stores and restaurants in can form. The cans will also be sold at their brewery location off Airport Road in Milford.

4The company has grown quickly in the last eight months as they have moved from construction of the brewing facility, to being featured at local restaurants and on to moving their product across the Delmarva peninsula in under one year. Williams states that the company’s quick growth can be contributed largely to the support of the local community.

“It’s been pretty phenomenal to have the support of people in the community around us, it has put us on the path for quick growth” said Williams. “We are seeing the need now to plan further out to prepare for more growth.”

Recently Mispillion River Brewing released three limited bottles including the Spawn of Prey, an imperial porter, Happy Ending, a chocolate stout, and Chipped Tooth, an imperial stout. Mispillion River Brewery is currently open on Friday and Saturday nights from 5pm to 9pm at 255 Mullet Road off Airport Road in Milford, DE.
