Milford Completes Perfect Season

By Kevin Eickman

This past season a group of young ladies that we are quite familiar with, did exactly what we have become accustomed to watching them do, win a title. This season was a rather special one for the girls, as they finished the season undefeated. Their final triumph was on July 9 as Milford defeated Dover 10-1 to earn the Delaware District I Big League Championship. The majority of the girls on this year’s squad were the same players that completed last year’s victorious trip to Worcester Massachusetts and Senior League Regional Championship.

Talking with assistant coach Ernie Scruggs about this past regular season, he was obviously pleased with how the girls performed. “You can’t do much better than perfect, the girls were incredible this season,” Scruggs commented. “You are talking about a group of girls that have been playing together for years and every year they continue to dig a little deeper and get a little better.”

At the big league level of softball, things work quite a bit differently when it comes to advancing to the regional tournament. The Big League squad that will travel up to Worcester this season will be made up of girls throughout all of District I. While the process of selecting players is difficult, it is a decision that is made in the best interest of the team as a whole. “While it’s not easy for every player that you coached to not make the squad, you have to be objective and make sure that the most deserving players get to go,” Scruggs said. “If I had my way everyone would be going, but that simply isn’t how it works.”

The Milford girls that made the squad are Kasey Fry, Megan Fry, Emily Messick, Harley Rickards, Brea McFarland,Shaina Reed, Brittany Brown, Whitney Demora and Haylee Scruggs. The team will be managed by Ron Fry and with a short period of time to get ready for the tournament, Scruggs thinks the team will be ready. “The girls that are on this team are all tournament tested, they have extensive travel ball experience and are battle tested,” he stated.

One of the key aspects of softball is pitching and this squad has a lot of it. In addition to Haylee Scruggs on the mound, there will be a solid collection of arms on this year’s squad. Reed, Brown and McFarland are all expected to log significant innings during the tournament. Other players on the squad include Cassetty Howerin, Alexis Howerin, Chelsea Fuhr and Sierra Watkins.

Talking with Rickards about the upcoming tournament, she believes that the team has what it takes to win. “When you take a look at all of the experience on this team, I think that we can get it done,” commented Rickards. “While we may come from different towns, we have all played together before and that is huge. We will really benefit from that fact.”

Traveling to the tournament isn’t cheap and fund raising is a big part of it. This Tuesday the girls will be conducting a fundraiser at Milford Walmart to help with the cost of such a huge expenditure. Individuals that would like to drop by, make a donation and wish them luck, can visit the girls from 5 to 9 pm.
