Art Goes To The Dogs

2The Mispillion Art League’s (MAL) tradition of collaboration with other non-profit continues as the organization teams up with the Delaware SPCA on Wednesday, July 2 from 5:30-7:00 pm. During this month’s open figure drawing session, artists will have the opportunity to sketch adoptable dogs from the local rescue shelter in Georgetown, DE. Although the models for the sketches are usually ballerinas, guitar players, beauty queens and the like, this time four-legged models will make there debut as models, and with a little luck will pose with calm grace.

“We welcome everyone to join us, from novice to professional artist, and support the SPCA,”said Cathy Walls, organizer of the monthly figure drawing sessions. “Open Sketch night is always fun and for the first time, our models will not be wearing clothes…they’ll be wearing fur.”

MAL encourages supporters of the SPCA to attend and bring donations for the shelter even if they are not participating as artists. The evening will also be an opportunity to discover the work MAL and the SPCA does within the community together and as separate entities. The sitter’s fee, made up by a recommended $5 donation by each of the artists, will go to the SPCA.

“The SPCA tirelessly does wonderful work for all animals and we thought it would be cool to join forces, two non-profits supporting each other,” said Anne Jenkins, one of the regular sketch artists. “It’s going to be fun and challenging. I find animals challenging to draw but who could resist trying to sketch these dogs? I also really hope it will help them find a loving home.”

Occurring the first Wednesday of each month, the Open Figure Drawing session will continue on August, 6 from 5:30 to 7pm. Artists of all levels are encouraged to join the free activity as the participants make a donation to the Mispillion Art League while there.

“People who want to learn to draw and professional artists need to practice their drawing as often as possible. Sketching a real person instead of a two dimensional photo is the best way,” commented artist Cathy Walls. “…but it isn’t always easy to find someone to sit and pose, so the Mispillion Art League brings in live, models for anyone to drop in and sketch.” Each session is BYOS, bring your own supplies, and the sessions are free although the artists pass the hat and collect donations that go to the model. All donations from the July session will go to the Georgetown SPCA.  In addition, the organization will get a little publicity.
