Lady Bucs Win Tourney Opener

By Kevin Eickman

Earning the nine seed in the DIAA State tournament meant the Milford Buccaneers softball team would have to take their show on the road. In a first round match up at Saint George’s this past Saturday, Milford displayed the solid play that has been their calling card the second half of the season.

The Bucs got up early as senior Kylie Nelson drove in junior Megan Fry and senior Kate Richard, in the top of the first inning. The early two nothing lead would be one that Milford would never relinquish as junior pitcher Haylee Scruggs, along with the Milford defense, would not yield a run on their trip north of the canal.

Milford would break things open in the third inning as they scored five runs. The Bucs would take the 7-0 lead into the fifth, where they would add three and the potential for the mercy victory that goes with it. Scruggs shut down Saint George’s in the bottom of the inning, giving Milford the tournament win they craved. “We got out early and never let up,” coach Drew Holleger commented. “Just as has been the case recently, we are playing to our strengths.”

With the win, Milford will advance to the second round and another road test. This one will be a much stiffer challenge for the Buccaneers as they travel north once again to battle the tournaments number one seed Caravel Academy. Caravel enters the game with a 13-4 regular season record and have played some of the same competition as Milford, who posted a 13-5 regular season record.

Back in April Caravel fell to Laurel, with junior Regan Green on the hill by a score of 2-1. Milford lost to Green two weeks ago by a 1-0 score. While games played weeks ago will not have any bearing on Tuesday’s contest, they can be used as an indication that a close game can be expected “We anticipate a close game, it’s going to be tough, but we believe in ourselves,” Holleger stated.

Both of the squads have players that can put runs up in a hurry and Holleger believes his defense will need to be on point to stay in the game. “We understand they can score, they have an offense that can manufacture runs, our defense will have to be at their best.” Tuesday’s first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 at Caravel.
