Meding’s Seafood, located just north of the city of Milford on Route 1, is celebrating 31 years in business this spring. Over three decades, two generations of the Meding family have grown the business from selling crabs to friends and family to offering fresh, local seafood to thousands of locals and tourists each year.
After a career as an electrician for 35 years, Henry Meding began Meding’s Seafood in 1983 selling crabs from his old pickup truck he bought for $250. Moving into a 16’ by 16’ shed in 1985, family and friends helped to construct the current building in 1990. That year, Henry’s son Rob joined the business just after graduation and the two began to build the business together.
“After working for someone else for so long as an electrician I wanted my son and family to have something established so they did not have to go out and look for a job,” commented Meding. “We started with nothing and we have been very blessed over the years.”
As the Route 1 bypass was built in the 90’s, visitors to the area wanted a place where they could sit down and eat. After much success, the business transformed from a carry out only facility to include a sit down restaurant, which now features three dining rooms and an outside deck.
“People started to want to sit down and eat so we brought in some card tables and before you knew it we had eight tables and needed a waitress,” commented Rob Meding. “We added the two dining rooms and now we even have an outside deck where we will be featuring live music.”
Serving fresh, local seafood, customers have the option to carry out from their fresh fish market or dine in. Known for their jumbo crabs during the season, Meding’s Seafood also features fresh cuts of swordfish, halibut, salmon, tuna and several other local fish. In addition, scallops, shrimp, oysters and clams of all sizes are available on a daily basis. Those dining in can enjoy the same seafood, beef and chicken entrees prepared by the Meding’s chefs.
The newly built outside deck will open on May 22, signaling the arrival of spring and summer. With live music, weekly car shows and other entertainment, Meding’s hopes to build their outside area as they prepare to construct the new outside bar.
“Meding’s has become a Delaware tradition and means a lot of things to a lot of different people,” commented Rob. “This is a unique place, it is not your average restaurant. We serve seafood with a smile and want to make sure that people are having fun and can relax.”
Located at 3697 Bay Road on Route 1 north of the city of Milford, Meding’s Seafood is open Monday through Friday 9am to 9pm and Sunday 9am to 8pm. The fresh fish market begins at 9am and the dining room begins serving at 11 am daily. Tailgate Tuesdays, a weekly car show on their front lawn, begins on May 27 as diners on the outside deck can listen to live entertainment.
