The University of Delaware Fighting Blue Hens will be visiting Milford again this year as the football team hosts spring practice at the Milford High School on Saturday, April 26. For the second year in a row, the Blue Hens will take to the road at Briggs Stadium as they invite fans to come out for a day of free fun, football and giveaways beginning at 10 am.
The University of Delaware began a new era of football last season, as Coach Dave Brock took the reigns. While the Blue Hens football team had enjoyed success in recent years, the decision was made for a change at the head coaching position. In his first year, Brock led the Blue Hens to a 7-5 record, 4-4 in the Colonial Athletic Association.
Along with the change in leadership, there has also been a renewed emphasis on how the program is looked at by the citizens of southern Delaware. Coming to Lower Delaware was something that Coach Dave Brock wanted to do from the start, as he believes it is important for University of Delaware to be active throughout the entire state.
“We are thrilled to come to Milford again this year. Last year was an opportunity for us to thank our fans downstate,” commented Coach Brock. “When I came to Delaware I was fascinated by the upstate and downstate division and we felt it was necessary for us to show our downstate fans how much we appreciate them.”
The event undertaken by the new regime is more than just a scrimmage but a football festival. Radio Disney will be on-site to provide interactive entertainment, and Delaware t-shirts will be distributed to the first 150 fans in attendance. Bounce House fun and the team’s gameday inflatable helmet will be up for fans to make their entrance. University of Delaware cheerleaders will also be on hand to add to the spirit.
Prior to this year’s scrimmage, the University will once again host a skills clinic set up, giving kids the chance to learn from real college football players. Boys and girls ages 4 to 12 can register to participate in Football Skills Fun with select Blue Hens football student-athletes. Families that register by Monday, April 21 can check-in from 10 to 10:30 am the day of the event as programming will start at 10:30 am. To register, individuals can do online to www.bluehens.com and click on the banner at the top of the page.
“What we are trying to do is more than just a practice,” commented Brock. “This is an entire event so that we can be as involved with our fans as we can.”
Following the on-field football action, as the football team hosts a practice and scrimmage, fans in attendance will have the chance to join their favorite Blue Hens football student-athletes on the field for autographs and photos. Coach Brock is excited to return to Briggs Stadium at Milford High School and is grateful for the Milford School District administration, the MHS football coaching staff including Coach Mike Tkach and Lynn and Karen McColley for hosting the Blue Hens in Milford.
