Lady Bucs Have Up, Down Week

By Kevin Eickman

This past week was certain to be a tough one for Milford softball, with back to back games Wednesday and Thursday, followed by highly regarded Padua team on Saturday. Facing Caesar Rodney first, Milford fell by a score of 8-5.

The following day, freshman pitcher Madison Swain took to the hill for her first ever career start against Seaford. The Blue Jays entered the game undermanned due to injury, able to only field a team of eight. Milford took advantage of the open space in the field as they posted 18 hits in the game, on their way to a 15-0 five inning victory.

The game saw freshman Rajene Bowe and Megan Fry, along with senior Kate Richard record three hits each. Coach Drew Holleger was pleased with how the team hit the ball “We hit the ball hard all game long and that’s important,” Holleger continued “When we are hitting the ball well, we are just a fun team to watch.”

Another player who was fun to watch was Swain. Demonstrating control and composure, she put together a fantastic first start, striking out seven and allowing no hits in the game, her first start was quite impressive. She was able to change locations and speeds, constantly keeping the visitors off balance. “This was a real nice first start for Madison, we really needed innings from her today and she delivered them for us.” Holleger stated.

The win moved Milford to 4-2 (1-1) on the season. With one third of the games already having been played, Coach Holleger believes the team is shaping up. “I think we’re going to be OK, we’ve been playing good ball, but we have been leaving too many people on base,” Holleger continued “We definitely need to get the big hits when we need them.”

On Saturday Milford fell to a hard hitting Padua team 10-2, watching their record drop to 4-3. With the Henlopen South being such a competitive division, Milford will need to put together a winning streak at some point. The Buccaneers will host Dover and Saint Georges Tech on Wednesday and Thursday of this week, both games start at 4:15.
