Caravel came out and showed why they were the No. 1 seed in the early game of the Girls Basketball State Championship semi-finals with a convincing 54-36 win over No. 5 Tatnall.
After a pretty even first quarter Caravel was able to pull away behind the hot shooting of Sophomore Jasiyah Crawford who was 4-9 from the field, but 3-5 from the three point line which gave her a total of 11 first half points. Caravel was able to outscore the Hornets 19-6 in the second quarter giving them a commanding 30-16 lead going into the half.
In the second half the game was played pretty evenly however the Hornets were never able to make up the difference from the second quarter. Caravel outscored them by only 2 points in each of the final quarters to come away with a 54-36 win advancing them to the DIAA state championship.
Taylor Watkins ended up leading the way for the Buccaneers with a double-double 18 points and 12 rebounds. India Johnston the Gatorade Player of the Year added 15 points.
Tatnall suffered a big loss in the second quarter of the game as team leader Emma Kirby went down with an injury never returning to the game. Emma had 10 points and 12 rebounds for the Hornets before exting. After her exit Jordan Cella led the Hornets in scoring with 7 points.
No. 11 Caravel now faces No. 2 Sanford for the DIAA Girls Basketball state championship on Friday night at the Bob Carpenter center home of the University of Delaware Fightin Blue hens with tip set for 7 p.m.
